Ndeego Craft is an initiative started in 2008 with the intention of providing opportunities to members of the Bwindi Community Conservation Association who are skilled in making traditional craft items. This craft was originally made for the domestic market and is therefore practical in nature – primarily basket ware made from local grasses and recycled material.
The local market is not large enough to support this community, who are primarily AIDS widows and who have no other means of support, and so we started Ndeego Craft; a program within which we purchase craft from the women’s group at the prevailing local market price, ship it to the UK market it. All proceeds from the sale of the craft in the UK are sent back to Uganda where some is used to purchase and ship more craft, and the remaining funds are given back to the women’s groups. There are many benefits to this scheme:
It provides an opportunity to the women’s group – not aid.
The members receive more for their craft than they would selling it locally.
We need your help in order for Ndeego Craft and similar initiatives run by partner NGOs to grow. If you are a retailer who is willing to stock Ndeego Craft or if you have some time available to sell these unique and hand made items at local events, farmers markets or churches please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
