Alongside Africa Uganda (AAU) is an independent registered Ugandan NGO supported by the UK charity Alongside Africa (registered no: 1146752), local organisations and local communities. AAU is committed to a world in which every person has the opportunity to earn a living and is run by Ugandans.
AAU provides Opportunities, not Aid.
Recognising the right of marginalised and disadvantaged communities to be able to take responsibility for their own development and independence we deliver our programmes in a way that ensures dignity and self-respect; the critical factor is that we focus on opportunities for human development instead of spending on unsustainable projects.
AAU works in partnership with local authorities, trusted schools and hospitals such as Rugarama Hospital and Amazing Love School.
AAU employs local Ugandans and works with volunteers from other countries. It knows every child, women’s group and beneficiary of its programmes individually.
Alongside Africa Uganda, though a small NGO, is successful in what it does because:
-
-
- Its programmes are designed and run by experienced local staff that understand the needs of the communities that benefit from them.
- It does not impose solutions but works to develop personalised solutions that work for each community.
-
As the name suggests Alongside Africa in the UK works closely alongside the team running Alongside Africa Uganda, spending as much time as possible in Uganda, developing and mentoring the team on the ground.
Replication of success
Our vision is to replicate the success of the three core programmes of Amasiko, Obumwe Microfinance and Give a Child a Chance within towns across Uganda that do not typically receive attention or support.
